This oil on canvas was painted by the artist in 1826 and depicts the battle or incident that occurred in 1814. The original artwork now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in San Fransisco, California. The scene is from the invasion of France by the Coalition forces which consisted of Austria, Prussia, Russia, United Kingdom, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and some of the German States. These countries united and invaded France to overthrow Napoleon Bonaparte, of which they were successful and banning him to the island of Elba. This French peasant family has just been made homeless by the coalition forces with the male head of the household being mortally wounded. He was a Calvary Veteran, his Legion of Honor medal is just visible inside his jacket and his carbine is on the ground at his side. The young woman is the picture of strength and bravery, with her little boy hiding in her skirt tails. To the left, the Russian Infantry and Cossacks have set fire to the farm buildings and are taking the cattle. To the right French peasants and a gendarme exchange fire with the Russians. This picture makes clear that not all of the people of France had yet forgotten this invasion of the Coalition powers. Famous people art print #45
