The size of the original work of art is 44 by 62 inches and now resides at the J. Paul Getty Museum. This painting was Rousseau's tribute to the 100th anniversary of the First French Republic in 1792. Peasants are dancing the Farandole, a popular dance in the South of France. They are dancing around three Liberty trees with two female figures representing the 1st and 3rd Republics. He uses brilliant colors and solid forms to express the happiness of the scene symbolizing good government. The erect postures of the leaders on the right signals the solidity of the French Republic. Rousseau also celebrates the people's dreams of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity which the Eiffel Tower and the Paris World Exhibition of 1889 had made visible all over the World with this painting.
