The lighting is vivid and the landscape dramatic, emphasizing Bierstadt's vision of the pristine west. In 1859 he traveled the frontier with Colonel Frederick Landers's Government expedition. He gathered many Indian artifacts on this trip such as buffalo robes, blankets, feathers, arrows, moccasins and all of the apparatus an Indian hunter would use. He filled his artist studio with these items in which he painted his scenes of the Indian territories of the Wild West. He also made many sketches and drawings during this expedition in which he used to make his paintings. Picture #152 fine art prints by famous artists
